In 1999 it was reported that a new virus and deadly virus hit the shores of America right smack dab in the media capital of the world - New York City.  Since that time there has been stories in major media about this so called deadly disease - and then came the raising of the voices of the people with one that was loud and clear - the voice of Robert Lederman.  With the backing of  impeccable research he helped turn the tide of the mass-spraying of mosquitoes.  Link to the site of the NoSpray Coalition and read all about a wonderful group of environmentalists who chimed in with a legal action against the mass-spraying efforts in NYC.  There is also the provocative research by Jim West who alleges that the issue of the dying birds falling from the sky is a result of air pollution and NOT the West Nile Virus.  Lederman's essays on the subject are listed on the left and information and links to the website of Jim West are on the right.  The information about mosquitoes is from Steve Tvedten's book, The Best Control.  Lederman's essays are in historical order with the earliest  listed first for the purpose of providing a better understanding of the WNV issue and the propaganda from the beginning.

Jim West's research has led to a theory that West Nile Virus (WNV) epidemic is caused by air pollution rather than the virus itself. It's interesting to note that WNV is almost identical to St. Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE). In fact, the NYC Department of Health mis-diagnosed WNV as SLE in 1999.   Immediately prior to the WNV epidemic that was announced in September 1999, Henry Stern of  the NYC Parks Dept in Rudolph Giuliani's administration, uncritically promoted the DEC's diagnoses that the rising incidence of bird death in NYC was due to an unknown and dastardly culprit, who for years was poisoning birds at random throughout the Boroughs of NYC. Please read the NY Daily News Articles on the dead birds in Central Park.  We all know that NYC's air is highly polluted because of congested motor vehicle traffic.  It is also near oil refineries in NJ.  Anyone from NYC who travels south on the NJ Turnpike to the beaches can tell you of the stench from the oil refineries when they pass them.  The  increase in global air travel can also be considered a source of pollution because there are more planes flying and three major airports serving the NYC area.  While researching West Nile and St. Louis virus epidemics, Jim has found adjacent oil refineries and steel mills at virtually every epidemic site.  NYC (Staten Island), NJ (Middlesex, Monmouth, Camden counties), Texas (Houston, Baytown, and Corpus Christi), California (Los Angeles), Israel (Haifa), Russia (Volgograd), Romania (Budapest). As of 1995, tri-state oil refineries increased the levels of MTBE (a toxic gasoline "oxygenate" additive) to as high as 15 percent. Just as the WNV epidemic was recognized in NYC in August 1999, the EPA recommended a ban on the controversial MTBE. Read  WNV and the Mosquito on Jim's site and it is  interesting to note that in 1999 there was a low and almost non-existent mosquito population. However, the propaganda by NYC's Mayor Rudolph Giuliani attempted to have us believe that there is a virus being spread by mosquitoes and he is treating it as a plague.
