Operation: Save the Children

Children are Our Society's Most Valuable Resource!

One of the biggest roadblocks in providing a solid and basic education to the children of the largest school system in the world is the Board of Education. I will fight to the death have the board placed directly under the mayor's control for accountability with the legal provision that a chancellor is installed who is an educator (remember the qualifications of Rudy Crew?) and can see to the implementation of appropriate educational policies.  In addition to that provision, I will also insist that the regulations established by Chancellor Crew in the C30 directive (selection of principals, assistant principals etc), is followed to the full letter of the law because it is in heavy favor of parent participation of district and school personnel selection.

Simply stated, the school system does not need a chancellor whose corporate origins and commitment to diminishing the power of unions will not contribute to the educational process.  We have enough businessmen and politicians who promise everything and deliver nothing in government, so let us get the most appropriate education expert in who can  lead our education system and the children into a future that can  be prosperous for many years to come!

With the increase in the immigrant population in the school system, there is a dire need for standardizing and enforcing  a competent bilingual education program.  In the role of Public Advocate, I will call on the assistance of specialists in that area (and there are many) to propose solutions the Board of Education to be carried forward on a city-wide basis.

Another population of children that I've discovered have special needs are those who are home-bound for a variety of  reasons.  With the technology that is available today, I will ensure that the Board of Education uses the full potential of technology available for this purpose.  There is no reason for ANY child who is homebound to be ignored because of special needs than cannot be fulfilled at the school.  My experience in computer based education (CBE) is a value added benefit that I bring to the Office of Public Advocate.

As a result of my educational experiences as an instructor in the corporate world, I know full well the value of a basic education to provide for a successful future. Not everyone is aware of this, but the high schools are under a different administration from the elementary schools and it is those schools that inherit the problems of illiterate and disillusioned grade school children. Since I know full well  the importance of identifying the primary learning facilities, strengths and weaknesses of each student in order to educate them, I will call on the assistance of specialists in the area of early
educational development techniques to propose standards for use in those areas.

If there are any issues that should be brought to the light of the public eye regarding issues that affect students, send me an email at Students in the Schools.  Your identity will be kept in the strictest of confidence.

Link to other issues about the school system from the table listed directly below:

The following table lists some of the issues that I've come across in my research.  They should prove valuable to parents and teachers alike.  If there are other websites that you are aware of and should be added to the list, please contact me at Education Websites.

The Issues: Sites containing information about the issues.
. .
I suspect that there is an indoor air quality problem at the school where my child attends.   Is there an inexpensive way that it can be tested? A place to start is at Mold Labs, which is a lab that analyzes for various substances.  Contact them directly  for proper collection methods of samples.  When at the site, click on the "homeowners" link for other important information and sources.
. .
Is there anything that we can do as parents or teachers on a personal level to protect the children's health in schools and at home? Listed on the Poison Page on this website are a number of web-based sources that can be accessed on the dangers that can harm all of us.  Included are links to the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Office of  New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
. .
Is there an organization that I can contact that is established specifically for safe schools? Yes.  You can link to the New York Healthy Schools Network. The site is filled with many environmental issues and various organizations that can be contacted for further information.
. .
Is there a web site that I can find out about a specific chemical or the chemicals that are used in products such as paint? Yes.  The Environmental Defense Scorecard has a search engine that can be used for this purpose.  You can search by chemical name or in the case of a paint product, by the CAS Number that can be found on the manufacturer's data sheet for the product.

Help elect me as your public advocate.  I will continue to fight for the way life should be in New York City because I am the only candidate who knows and cares about how good it can be!

..

I became a community activist in 1995. Because of my success as an activist and uncovering corruption in the system, I gave up my successful corporate career of 30 years in the computer field in 1997 to concentrate on building a career as an advocate for all.

My word of honor!

It's unfortunate that money talks and everyone else walks in today's society. Contribute what you can to help me get elected.

One of my strenghts is that of an educator. Take a look at the community cable projects that I've done. Clips from the shows are due by the beginning of September.
